Course Overview
An introductory class in databases, explaining what a database is and how to use one.
Topics include database design, ER modeling, database normalization, relational algebra, SQL,
physical organization of records and blocks, heap files, sorted files, hashing,
extensible hashing, linear hashing and B trees. Each student will design, load, query and
update a nontrivial database using DBMS.

Grades
- Midterm ( closed book exam ), 25 %.
- Final ( closed book exam ), 30%.
- Project, 45% .
Academic Integrity
Students are encouraged to discuss the materials,
homework, and projects together. However, all written assignments and
programs must be done individually or in assigned groups. Academic
dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: plagiarism, cheating in exams,
unauthorized collaboration and falsifying academic records. Violation of
any of these may result in a grade penalty on assignments, an "F" in the
course, dismissal from an academic unit, revocation of admission,
suspension from the University , etc.

Programming assignments, that is the project,
account for nearly half the grade. Allocate your time, and arrange your
schedule accordingly. The project is to be done individually.
